Who can apply?
National Taiwan University College of Medicine (NTUCM) offers clinical electives for foreign medical students who have completed the basic medical sciences and partially completed clerkships. In order to be eligible for a limited number of clinical clerkship positions for foreign medical students, the following requirements must be met:
1.Students must be in good health and in good academic standing in their own medical school.
2.Students must have completed and passed at least 48 weeks of required clerkships including a course of Internal Medicine prior to taking overseas clinical electives.
3.Proficiency in Chinese or English language, particularly in speaking and listening comprehension, is preferred. Our teaching medium is mainly in Mandarin, accompanied by English textbook, slides, and history system.
The Chinese proficiency statement could be as followings:
· If the student received primary education in Taiwan or China, just write it on the curriculum vitae.
· If the student can speak Chinese, a statement certified by the student or family members would be accepted. (EX: I hereby certified that [student] is currently fluent in speak conversational Mandarin/Chinese. [signature])
· If the student is (has been) enrolled in Chinese language classes, a certificate or a transcript of record by the language center is preferred.
Required Application Documents
The following documents must be received 2-6 months prior to the beginning of the elective clerkship:
1. a completed application form along with a recent photograph (passport size)
2. a letter of recommendation from the Director of Academic (Student) Affairs or the Dean of the Medical School (use the enclosed form)
3. curriculum vitae
4. certificate of clinical clerkships (or equivalents) completed or will be completed at the student’s school before taking electives
5.proof of health insurance, for the student while traveling and while in Taiwan
6. a non-refundable application fee of US$75 (The payment must be made payable to “National Taiwan University College of Medicine”)
7. a statement or approval of proficiency in the Chinese language (preferred option)
Upon receipt of the above documents, the application will be reviewed by chairperson(s) of the respective department(s) and it normally takes about 4-6 weeks to process. When the application is accepted, a letter of acceptance describing all rotation schedules of the clinical electives will be issued. The applicant must confirm his/her decision about our arrangements at least 4 weeks prior to the start date of the elective term. If he/she needs to withdraw from the electives or change his/her arrival date, please notify in writing at least 8 weeks before the elective term.
Course fee and Insurance
Each student should donate US$75 per week for each elective course, when he/she reports to School of Medicine, NTUCM. A minimum fee of US$150 will be implemented even if the total period of electives is less than 2 weeks. The fee is not refundable if the student subsequently shortens or withdraws the courses. No subsidy or stipend is available from NTUCM or its affiliated hospital for the student’s stay in Taipei. In addition, the student is responsible for covering his/her own health insurance.
The following courses are available for your clinical electives at the National Taiwan University Hospital. The total term of your clinical electives ranges from 2 weeks to 14 weeks. The length of time for each course in the respective department is as follows. The length of time for each course in the department could be adjusted to students' need. Extension of 3-week elective courses to 4-week is acceptable. For internal medicine, 3 or 4 weeks in one division or 2 divisions for the 6-week electives are all accepted.
6-week course：Internal Medicine, Psychiatry
4-week course：Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Emergency Medicine
3-week course：Neurology, Otorhinolaryngology, Urology, Dermatology, Orthopedics, Family Medicine, Anesthesiology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Surgery, Radiology (nuclear medicine, imaging medicine),Oncology
In the application form, please list the desired course(s) and also the alternatives in case your choice(s) is (are) not available during your elective term. You may also indicate certain elective courses or subspecialties of your particular interest, which are not listed above; we will do our best to accommodate your request. Please be noticed that once you have been accepted for electives and want to change your dates or courses of rotation, an official letter from your school to change your electives dates will be needed.If a change of elective for a given time period is requested after an application for a different elective was accepted for that time period, a fee of 75 USD is required for processing.
The term for clinical electives is preferred to be rendered during our regular semesters:
(1) from mid September to mid January; (2) from late February to mid June.
Credits, Certificate, Evaluation and Final Report
Credits for the clinical electives taken by foreign students are not available from our hospital or medical school. However, a certificate will be given to the student upon completion of the clinical electives, and a candid evaluation of the student’s performance assessed by each supervisor will be sent to the Dean or Director of Academic (Curricular or Student) Affairs of your medical school.
Within two weeks after completion of the elective term, the student must submit a final report for the overall elective program and give comments on individual courses.

Announcement from NTU Medical School: Incoming exchange students boarding in Jing Fu Mansion will only be given the student rate of 400 NT dollars per day per person (Jing-Fu will arrange two students to share a two-bed room). Incoming exchange students who insist on boarding in a single room will have to pay the normal rate of accommodations at 33,000 NT dollars per month (or 1500 NT dollars per day the first 10 days, after which at 900 NT dollars per day), without the student discount.
Jing Fu Mansion reserves the right to make any and all arrangements for the accommodations of those students paying student rates.
Jing Fu Mansion will be under construction during August to September. Please be note the price will go up after remodeling.
